Chapter 22: A Matter of Life and Death (2)

She waited for over an hour, but apart from the occasional employee coming and going, she didn’t see Zhang Jingchan at all. Li Weiyi was parched and too embarrassed to ask the receptionist for a bottle of water.

The receptionist even politely asked her to leave, saying, “If you have nothing else to do, please leave. Don’t linger in our lobby.”

Li Weiyi replied, “I won’t leave until he arrives. Don’t worry about me.”

After waiting for another half hour, a car pulled up outside, and a young man with a buzz cut in a suit strode in. Li Weiyi immediately ran over and stopped him: “Li Yunmo!”

The receptionist also rushed over, quickly explaining, “Mr. Li, this Miss Li insists on seeing Mr. Zhang, but the secretary said she doesn’t have an appointment. She’s been in the lobby for an hour and a half and refuses to leave.”

Li Weiyi glanced at the receptionist, thinking, “Even the receptionist at Zhang Jingchan’s company is quite capable; she handles things with perfect tact and diplomacy.”

Li Yunmo frowned, looked at Li Weiyi, and didn’t recognize her: “What do you need Mr. Zhang for?”

To Li Weiyi, Li Yunmo’s youthful, afro-haired look from yesterday was still vivid in her mind, but now he was a composed and capable young man with clear eyes, which gave Li Weiyi a strange sense of familiarity. “My name is Li Weiyi. Eight years ago, I fell into the water, and Zhang Jingchan saved me. He even brought you to visit me afterwards, and he always wanted to come to my house—remember?”

Li Yunmo’s eyes widened instantly, but he quickly regained his composure, coughed lightly, and said, “I vaguely remember, but that was many years ago. We haven’t seen you since—what brings you here suddenly?”

Li Weiyi thought to herself, “He’s still quite guarded; he’s really grown up.”

“It’s something very important. Could you take me upstairs to see him?”

Li Yunmo glanced at the receptionist, who shook her head slightly. Li Yunmo understood, and Li Weiyi understood too—Zhang Jingchan wouldn’t see her.

Li Yunmo’s expression softened. He said, “President Zhang’s schedule is managed by his secretary; I can’t help you.” Turning to leave, Li Weiyi grabbed his arm and whispered, “Li Yunmo, this is a matter of life and death! Take me upstairs, just a few words, please! I know you’re a good person.”

However, upon hearing the word “life and death,” Li Yunmo was startled. His eyes darted to her stomach, and he quickly pulled his hand away, saying, “Don’t talk nonsense! It’s impossible… all these years… I can’t handle Brother Chan’s affairs; don’t come looking for me!”

Li Weiyi immediately supported her lower back with one hand and clutched her stomach with the other… “Li Yunmo, you stop right there! Don’t you know I was Zhang Jingchan’s white moonlight back then! Have you ever seen him care that much for anyone else? Last night, he even drove me home, using that expensive Zegna coat like a rag to shield me from the rain, and even let me use her mother’s yellow blanket from the car—could I make these things up? Zhang Jingchan once said, ‘Li Yunmo is the one who truly understands me.’ Now he can’t get over his own conscience and refuses to see me. As his only confidant, are you going to leave me here, or take me upstairs to see him?”

    Li Yunmo trembled.

“Li Yunmo is the one who truly understands me.”

Zhang Jingchan had only said this once, and only to him. Later, after the Zhang family’s misfortune, Brother Chan never mentioned it again.

    So, Brother Chan still remembered.

So, Brother Chan had mentioned this phrase to this woman. The belief that had sustained Li Yunmo through countless nights.

Li Yunmo turned around, looking at her with a complicated expression. Perhaps this fleeting white moonlight truly held a different meaning for Brother Chan. After all, in the few days after Brother Chan met her, his entire personality changed drastically; he became both cunning and ruthless for her sake—although he quickly returned to normal, how could it be without true love? Moreover, that year was the last carefree period of Brother Chan’s life.

So years later, they met again behind his back, and their reunion was as fiery as ever. A whirlwind of passion…

The more Li Yunmo thought about it, the more likely it seemed. And then he thought about how Zhang Jingchan had remained single all these years, seemingly devoid of romantic desire. If Li Weiyi was really pregnant… perhaps she was carrying Zhang Jingchan’s only child in this life…

He gritted his teeth and said, “Come upstairs with me.”

    Li Weiyi raised an eyebrow.

    A gesture of goodwill.

Li Yunmo led Li Weiyi to a small, empty conference room on the third floor, telling her to wait. He even had someone pour her a cup of warm chrysanthemum tea, something that wouldn’t harm the fetus. Li Weiyi waited calmly for over ten minutes, but instead of Li Yunmo, she was greeted by the female secretary who had been with Zhang Jingchan that day.

The secretary said, “Ms. Li, please come with me. Mr. Zhang is waiting for you.”

    Li Weiyi: “Where’s Li Yunmo?”

“Oh,” the secretary said casually, “Mr. Li just got criticized by Mr. Zhang and has to copy the company’s management regulations ten times by hand.”

Li Weiyi glanced at her, understanding that Zhang Jingchan had someone tell her this. So be it; for the price of changing her sister’s fate, writing ten copies of the regulations was nothing.

At the end of the corridor, the secretary knocked on the door, gesturing for Li Weiyi to go in, while she stayed outside, closing the door behind her.

The office wasn’t large. A long bookshelf was filled with books; there was a desk, a tea table by the window, and several sofas, almost all in black, white, and gray tones, simple and tidy. Zhang Jingchan sat behind the dimly lit executive desk, holding a stack of documents. He glanced up at her, then slammed the documents onto the desk.

He wasn’t wearing a suit today, but a dark gray jacket and casual pants, with a white T-shirt underneath. He leaned back, his long legs stretched out, one hand on his chin, tilting his head slightly as he looked at her.

The aura he exuded casually was subtly intimidating. Li Weiyi was carefully choosing her words when Zhang Jingchan said, “My white moonlight has arrived; have a seat.”

Li Weiyi’s face flushed. Just as she was about to explain, Zhang Jingchan glanced at her flat stomach and asked unhurriedly, “How many months pregnant? I heard it’s mine.”
