    Chapter 54: My Hero (2)

Several policemen tiptoed in separately. Li Weiyi was frantic and wanted to follow, but Zhang Jingchan grabbed her wrist, maintaining a safe distance from the police, and the two went inside. Ding Chenmo turned to see that Zhang Jingchan was being considerate and didn’t pay them any further attention.

There were three rooms in total, all with broken roofs, covered in dust, and smelling extremely foul. Ding Chenmo immediately noticed a few drops of dried blood on the ground. He gave his men a few hand signals: one to guard the door, one to guard the courtyard, and two others to follow him as they searched each room.

Li Weiyi’s heart was pounding. She gripped Zhang Jingchan’s hand tightly. Seeing her pale face and sweaty palms, Zhang Jingchan simply put his arm around her waist and watched the police’s movements with her.

Ding Chenmo quickly left the first room, his expression calm. He glanced at them, then slipped into the second room. A short while later, he shouted, “The person is here!” Several policemen rushed in.

    “The suspect isn’t here!”

    “Alive! Still alive!”

    “Slowly help him up!”

Li Weiyi could no longer hold back. She shook off Zhang Jingchan’s hand and ran over, tears streaming down her face. The two policemen near the door were stunned when they saw the boy rushing in crying, but they didn’t stop him.

In the dimly lit, foul-smelling, and messy room, a person was bound with ropes, pale-faced, and barely alive. It was Li Zhongheng. He had multiple knife wounds on his body, almost unhealed, many still bleeding. Pools of blood were on the floor, and he was unconscious.

Ding Chenmo carefully helped him up, wrapped him in his coat, and shouted, “Quick! Call an ambulance!”

Li Weiyi rushed to him, grabbed Li Zhongheng’s hand, and cried out, “Dad! Dad!”

Ding Chenmo looked at the boy in surprise, while the other policemen exchanged bewildered glances.

Zhang Jingchan had already chased her into the house, pulling her into her arms. He examined Li Zhongheng carefully for a moment, then looked up at Ding Chenmo and asked, “Is his life in danger?”

Ding Chenmo: “I’m not a doctor, but it’s a miracle he’s alive. Judging by the amount of bleeding, if we had waited another half day…”

Li Weiyi wiped away her tears, saying bitterly, “That beast Zhou Zhihao! It must be him!”

Ding Chenmo glanced at Zhang Jingchan again. Zhang Jingchan said calmly,

“My boyfriend is quite sentimental; he treats my dad like his own father.” Then he lowered his gaze and said softly, “Dad, you absolutely mustn’t be hurt.”

    Ding Chenmo then looked away.

Two policemen carried the bed board from next door, making a makeshift stretcher. Zhang Jingchan forcefully carried Li Weiyi backward, while the policemen carefully moved Li Zhongheng onto the bed board and carried him to the sunny, fresh-air courtyard to wait for the ambulance.

Li Weiyi sat on the ground beside Li Zhongheng, holding his hand tightly, tears streaming down her face, a mixture of sorrow and joy. Zhang Jingchan, like her, sat on the dirty ground, making phone calls to Mrs. Li and Li Xiaoyi, clearly instructing them to come to the hospital immediately.

Then he put one arm around her back, gently touching her tear-streaked face with the back of his other hand, saying, “Can you speak? Try to calm down.”

Li Weiyi immediately tried to calm her breathing: “Go ahead.”

“Call Xu Yi and tell him to contact the director of the Municipal People’s Hospital immediately and prepare the best specialists for your father.”

Li Weiyi looked at him with teary eyes, suddenly throwing herself into his arms, hugging him tightly, burying her face in his chest: “Thank you, thank you! Waaah…”

His 1.8-meter height made Zhang Jingchan’s chest ache. He let out a soft breath, gazing at her dark hair just above his chest, and couldn’t help but chuckle. He gently patted her back. “Alright, don’t cry; hurry up and make the call.”

Li Weiyi, her voice thick with emotion, made the call to Xu Yi. Xu Yi answered all her questions, finally asking, “Ah Chan… are you alright? Did you cry? Should I come over?”

    “No, no need, thank you.”

She had the call on speakerphone. After hanging up, her emotions calmed somewhat. Then she heard Zhang Jingchan beside her say calmly, “He’s quite gentle with you.”

Li Weiyi was puzzled. She replied, “Isn’t he trying to please you?”

Zhang Jingchan didn’t say anything more.

The police were busy investigating, making contacts, and reporting. For a while, only the two of them remained, sitting in the sunlight in the center of the courtyard, watching over the unconscious Li Zhongheng.

A figure flashed past the doorway, followed by a woman’s piercing scream: “Zhihao, run!”

Zhang Jingchan looked up abruptly. He was closest to the door, where several policemen were scrambling inside and out. He shouted, “Zhou Zhihao!” as a warning, and jumped up to chase after him.

Li Weiyi wanted to follow but was worried about her father. Just then, several policemen rushed out at the sound of the commotion. Ding Chenmo yelled, “Xiao Wang, stay!” Li Weiyi, seeing that his father’s breathing had stabilized and that the remaining policeman Xiao Wang was tall and imposing, got up and ran after Zhang Jingchan.

Ding Chenmo hadn’t expected Li Weiyi to run so fast, disappearing into the doorway in an instant. He thought to himself, “A promising young man! Too bad he’s the son of the richest man.”

As soon as Li Weiyi rushed out, she saw a brand-new BMW parked a dozen meters away. Beside the car door, the petite Zhang Jingchan was grabbing someone by the collar. The person, dressed in designer clothes and looking quite respectable, was none other than Zhou Zhihao! Li Weiyi inwardly cried out, “Oh no!”

Zhou Zhihao punched Zhang Jingchan in the face with a loud “thud,” stunning the onlookers! Zhang Jingchan didn’t even utter a sound when he was knocked to the ground, but he scrambled to his feet and threw a punch at Zhou Zhihao.

The result of this punch was predictable.

Zhou Zhihao grinned maliciously, grabbing Zhang Jingchan’s small, pink fist. He was a thug, skilled in fighting, and now, in a fit of rage, he grabbed Zhang Jingchan’s head and slammed it against the car door.

Li Weiyi watched Zhang Jingchan being brutally beaten by Zhou Zhihao like a rag doll, and she exploded. She screamed “Ah!” and lunged forward, ramming her head into Zhou Zhihao’s waist.

Zhou Zhihao’s back nearly broke from the impact, forcing him to release Zhang Jingchan.

Zhang Jingchan had never suffered such humiliation in a fight before. He had completely forgotten that he was now a vulnerable 17-year-old girl. He was dizzy, his face bruised and swollen, covered in blood. He steadied himself for a while before regaining his balance. Looking up, he saw Li Weiyi struggling with Zhou Zhihao.

But Zhou Zhihao never expected such a large young man to fight him like this! Li Weiyi was only interested in pulling his hair, grabbing him, scratching him, and biting him. Zhou Zhihao was stunned for a moment, even having the illusion that he was being harassed by a woman.

But Zhou Zhihao had been fighting for many years, possessing extremely rich experience and skills. Seeing several policemen surrounding him, he was filled with both anxiety and hatred and raised his hand to deliver two resounding slaps to Li Weiyi’s face.
