    Chapter 80: My Girl (2)

Zhang Moyun smiled slightly, looked at Zhang Jingchan, his Adam’s apple bobbing, and asked, “And you? You don’t have to carry the debt anymore, right? Everything about the futures is arranged; even if I die, it won’t affect anything. Are you and your mother doing well?”

Zhang Jingchan was silent for a few seconds, then answered, “Pretty good.”

The three of them were silent for a while, then Zhang Jingchan said, “To make a long story short, two weeks from now, on July 25th, you will die in Liu Ying’s bed due to an overdose. All the evidence shows that you and she are having an affair.”

Zhang Moyun was stunned, then angrily said, “Bullshit! Me, interested in her? How could that be… How could there be any evidence out of thin air?!”

Li Weiyi noticed that Zhang Jingchan’s delicate eyebrows relaxed slightly, and he leaned back in his chair, asking, “So you really didn’t cheat on my mom?”

Zhang Moyun laughed in anger, saying decisively, “No! What kind of relationship do I have with your mother? She’s been with me since she was twenty, from nothing to where she is today. Don’t be fooled by her not working now; she used to run construction sites with me. Without her, there would be no Fuming. How could I do something so heartless? Besides, Fuming could die at any moment. I’m working like a dog all the time. Do you think I have time to play around with women? Especially someone like Liu Ying? Do you think I’m a stupid pig?”

Zhang Jingchan snorted and said, “I don’t think you’re that stupid. Villa No. 43, Yanghuai Lane—that house is in your name, you know that, right?”

Zhang Moyun frowned and nodded his head: “Besides this villa, I only have two other houses in Chen City. You and your mother both know that.”

Zhang Jingchan: “Can you find out who’s behind this?”

Zhang Moyun’s expression was serious, with a sharp glint in his eyes, and he answered, “Yes.”

Li Weiyi said, “Uncle, Fuming’s mole is much more deeply hidden than we thought, and it must be someone closest to you. Besides Liu Ying, there may be more than one.”

The Zhang father and son exchanged a glance. Zhang Moyun gave a self-deprecating smile and said, “I’ll check on the house matter when I get back from Beijing.”

Zhang Jingchan: “Do you have to go to Beijing?”

“Absolutely. I need to meet a high-ranking official. Fuming wants to delay for two more months until the futures market is sold off; his attitude is very important.”

“When is the earliest you can come back?”

Zhang Moyun initially wanted to say three days later, but looking at their faces, he changed his mind and said, “The day after tomorrow evening.”

Neither Li Weiyi nor Zhang Jingchan spoke.

Since the last time, Zhang Moyun knew they could only stay for three days each time, and feeling guilty, he comforted them, saying, “This time when I go to Beijing, I’ll try to bring back an external finance team. We must find those bastards. Damn it, we’ve been investigating internally for two months and haven’t found anything.”

Zhang Jingchan said, “Okay, but starting today, hire more bodyguards. Including hiring finance companies, use connections outside the company. Don’t let anyone from within Fuming get involved. If someone wants to kill you, are you just going to wait to be killed?”

Zhang Moyun’s eyes were clouded, and he replied, “I know what I’m doing.”

Li Weiyi felt relieved. Her intuition told her that even if they didn’t do anything else this time, given Zhang Moyun’s personality and methods, he would have received advance warning, and no one could harm him.

Zhang Jingchan said, “Also, give me all the access to your company accounts.”

Zhang Jingchan took Li Weiyi back to the Zhang family villa, to Zhang Moyun’s study. Not long after, a whole truckload of paper ledgers was secretly transported from Fuming Group and delivered to this study.

Fuming Group had already conducted a round of audits, so these were readily available.

Li Weiyi was forced to sit behind the desk by Zhang Jingchan, all the paper ledgers piled on the floor, forming a tall, perfect circle around her.

Li Weiyi felt dizzy and asked, “What do you want?”

Zhang Jingchan smiled, stood behind her, and said, “Accountant Li, please check the accounts.”

Li Weiyi tilted her head to look at him: “No, are you serious? So many ledgers—how am I supposed to finish reading them in two and a half days? Your dad checked for two months and still couldn’t find anything.”

Zhang Jingchan bent down, one hand on the back of her chair, the other on the desk, so that Li Weiyi was practically half-embraced in his arms. Li Weiyi instinctively flinched back but immediately stopped, extending her arm—much stronger and leaner than Zhang Jingchan’s—and slapping away his arm that was resting on the table. She said slowly and deliberately, “Why are you so close when you’re supposed to be talking?”

Zhang Jingchan’s skin was delicate, and the slap actually stung. He rubbed his arm, stared at Li Weiyi’s subtly smug face, smiled, and didn’t retaliate.

Li Weiyi leaned back in her office chair with an air of nonchalance, raising her chin at him: “Continue. How did you come up with such an inhumane idea?”

    Zhang Jingchan crossed his arms…

He crossed his arms, leaned ramrod straight against the table, his right toe slightly hooked around his left, and looked down to meet her gaze in the chair.

Li Weiyi felt a pang of envy. Even though he was a girl, every casual movement he made exuded a natural aura.

Thinking this, the confidence Li Weiyi had deliberately cultivated instantly vanished. Her back slumped, and she collapsed onto the table, curling into a ball again.

Zhang Jingchan, however, found the limp Li Weiyi much more pleasing to the eye. He casually ruffled her hair, and she didn’t want to move, letting him stroke her. Their eyes met, one above the other, neither speaking.

Li Weiyi felt a tingling, numbing sensation wash over her.

Zhang Jingchan ran his fingers through her hair again before stopping, saying, “My dad doesn’t understand finance. Hiring someone to audit the accounts will take three days, and signing the contract requires a seal, which is a big undertaking, and it’s hard to guarantee there won’t be leaks. It would be best if we could find something during our few days here. Is there anyone more suitable than you? A financial analyst from a large corporation has financial concepts eight years more advanced than theirs.”

Li Weiyi’s lips curled up, but she still retained some rationality: “But three days is too short.”

Zhang Jingchan said, “If it were my most elite financial analyst, three days would be enough. Unfortunately, I can’t bring enough people.”

Li Weiyi glared at him, then he laughed, saying, “Just kidding. We’ll do our best; man proposes, God disposes.”

    Li Weiyi sighed: “Alright.”

Time was of the essence, so Li Weiyi got right to work, burying herself in the task at hand. Zhang Jingchan glanced at her a few more times, then slung his backpack over his shoulder. “I’m leaving. I’ll come back this afternoon.”

    “Where are you going?”

    “Exam.”

    “…”

“I’ll try to hand in my math exam early this afternoon.”

    “That’s not necessary…”

However, as it turned out, even Zhang, the former top student in the Economics and Management Department and a powerful figure in the business world, couldn’t hand in his high school math final exam early.

Zhang Jingchan arrived late, looking slightly tired. However, once Li Weiyi entered a high-speed work mode, she was almost oblivious to the people and things around her. When Zhang Jingchan came in to greet her, she just grunted and didn’t even look at him. Zhang Jingchan brought her dinner from Sister Liu, forcing her to stop to eat. She only ate a few minutes’ worth of food before putting down her bowl and continuing to work.
