    Chapter 31. Level 1 Alert

Against a clear blue sky, more than twenty Cheetah fighters, spread out in a fan-shaped attack formation, hurtled across the low skies above the ancient city with lightning speed. Golden streaks of fire drew magnificent shadows across the sky and earth, finally crashing to the ground with a deafening roar. Amidst the sea of fire, the city was filled with agonizing cries.

“What are they trying to do?” Yue Mo’s chest heaved violently, as if he wished he could rush forward and use his flesh and blood to block the cannonballs.

“Strike conspicuous military fortifications to reduce casualties during the landing,” Su Mi replied. “Don’t worry, civilian casualties won’t be significant.”

Passing over rooftops, mountain roads, and woods, the distant distance flew away at Yue Mo’s feet like flowing water. The two soon arrived at the cave where the Cheetah was hiding.

“I’m waiting for them to land,” Yue Mo said coldly.

Su Mi understood his spirit; his clear, melodious shouts earlier were likely a call to arms. These martial arts masters were prepared to fight the invaders to the death. But how could Meng Xicong allow them to get close? He would likely only use heavy firepower to eliminate them from a distance if they encountered resistance.

“It’s like throwing an egg against a rock,” Su Mi pointed out the facts without any mercy. “I believe that from landing to occupying the entire territory, it will not take more than an hour, or half an hour.”

Yue Mo opened his mouth but couldn’t refute it. His face was tense. He put Su Mi on the main seat, suddenly leaned forward, and bowed deeply.

“Miss Su,” he said in a resounding voice. “The princess remains unconscious and unconvinced. I believe if she were to wake up and see the tragic scene today, she would regret what she did to you. I hope you will forgive the past. I leave the Tang Dynasty in your care.”

The uneasy feeling she had when she flew around the world before resurfaced. But Su Mi couldn’t immediately recall why.

Time was running out, and she couldn’t think too much. She just gently supported Yue Mo and said, “I’ll do my best.”

Su Mi’s estimate was correct. Lian Duo, as the frontline commander in charge of this occupation operation, had planned the capture time to be exactly one hour. This included the time for the Cheetah to bombard the military fortifications in the early stages.

At this moment, Lian Duo and his commanding staff were standing before the massive radar panel in the combat command center, monitoring the overall progress of the attacking team. Meng Xicong, also silent, stood beside Lian Duo with his hands behind his back.

Lian Duo had long heard the news of Su Mi’s escape and the commander’s ship-wide manhunt. He could only play dumb and never mention the time he led Su Mi to “observe” the Commander.

The ground landing was about to begin… Meng Xicong did not hesitate at all but instead had an unfathomable smile on his face.

So when the technical officer turned around in surprise and reported that the enemy’s nuclear missile signal had been detected, it really surprised Lian Duo.

“Colonel, we’ve detected signals from ten nuclear bombs, located in different locations on the planet. The nuclear bombs… have just been released from security.” The technical officer pointed to the computer screen in front of him.

Meng Xicong smiled, and Lian Duo, seeing his expression, also realized what was happening. He calmly asked, “Report the location, distance, and energy level of the nuclear bomb.”

The technical officer quickly reported a series of coordinates and numbers. Lian Duo immediately frowned and looked at Meng Xicong. “They’re all located in important mineral and water resource locations. Commander, what should we do?”

Before Meng Xicong could reply, the communications officer stood up and said, “Commander, we’ve received the mercenary identification code requesting communication. They’re on an encrypted channel.”

Seemingly anticipating this call, Meng Xicong picked up the phone at the command post and immediately said, “You’re very bold.”

Even a simple sentence startled Su Mi on the other end of the line. Meeting Yue Mo’s concerned gaze, Su Mi calmed herself down and replied calmly, “Commander, this is my home.”

“Ten nuclear bombs—you think that can stop me?” There was even a hint of laughter in his voice.

“We can’t stop it,” she replied, “but polluting this planet is enough. It will take the adults at least a year and a half to rebuild and clean up the pollution. That’s enough time for the Zerg and the Alliance to discover the planet. It’s not worth it for the adults.”

Meng Xicong said calmly, “What do you want?”

“Planetary autonomy, joint development,” Su Mi was still a little nervous when she made this request.

Silence fell on the other end of the line.

“Are you scared?” Meng Xicong’s voice suddenly lowered to a whisper in her ear. “Kitten?”

Su Mi then realized that her palms were full of sweat.

“Yeah.” She closed her eyes to suppress the slight churning in her chest. Even though he couldn’t see, she nodded. “Yes, I was afraid you’d be angry.”

On the other end, Meng Xicong suddenly broke into a deep laugh. His clear voice betrayed no emotion. “The landing operation has been suspended. I’ll have the contract delivered. Kitty, you’re right. If it weren’t for the Alliance we’ve been dealing with these past few days, we wouldn’t have given you the time to plant the nuclear bomb. Everything is for the sake of profit. I promise you planetary autonomy and joint development.”

Su Mi’s heart skipped a beat. She knew he was a man of his word.

“Thank you, sir.” She paused, then said, “Sir, do you blame me?”

Meng Xicong was silent for a moment, then suddenly said, “Little cat, this is the last time I’m allowing you to escape from my side.”

Su Mi felt a little sad in her heart. She replied calmly and without revealing any trace of it, “…I understand.”

After hanging up the phone, Su Mi looked at Yue Mo in a daze. “He agreed. Send someone to get the employment contract immediately. I will help you negotiate with the other party. But as long as there is a promise of planetary autonomy, I think your life will at least not be too difficult. And with the advanced technology they bring, perhaps it can bring better development to the planet.”

Yue Mo stared at her increasingly pale face and nodded. “Thank you for your kindness.”

“Let’s go back to the city.” Su Mi’s cold hand touched the control lever and started the engine.

The Cheetahs accelerated, rising vertically into the sky. Looking down, thick smoke billowed and flames shot up from numerous locations. The Cheetahs had completely retreated. A fleeting glimpse revealed only a faint black shadow disappearing into the clouds. On the ground, amidst the crisscrossing streets and clusters of low-rise houses, the displaced people lay as insignificant and humble as ants.

Watching the city turn to ashes by his own hand, Su Mi couldn’t help but recall their conversation just now…

“What are your plans?” A sudden voice interrupted Su Mi’s thoughts. It was Yue Mo, who looked at her with deep eyes. “Are you going back… to that man?”

Su Mi was silent for a moment: “No, never again.”

Yue Mo turned his head, gazing out at the vast expanse of sky and earth, the chaotic city. He looked at Su Mi with a sincere gaze. “Miss Su, I, Lin, can only wish you happiness and safety. If you need me in the future, I, and the thousands of warriors of the entire Tang Dynasty, will be at your disposal, ready to help you through thick and thin.”

Su Mi smiled at him and said, “Thanks.”

When the Cheetah arrived above the palace, the scene was horrific. Nearly all the tall buildings had been razed to the ground, and the royal quarters were covered in blood… Su Mi suspected that Meng Xicong had already sent people down to the surface during this period to gather all available clues. The elimination of the royal family and high-ranking officials was simply to establish a puppet government in the future.

Amidst the flames of the palace ruins, maids and eunuchs fled in all directions. Yue Mo, protecting Su Mi, headed in the opposite direction of the crowd, stepping deeper. Near the imperial court, Yue Mo finally caught hold of a sixth-rank official and demanded, “Where’s the princess? Where’s the prime minister?”

The official’s face was filled with horror: “Dead, all dead! The Weiyang Palace has collapsed, the imperial court has collapsed, they are all buried inside!”

    Ten minutes later.

The nation’s political situation had collapsed. The princess, who had been unconscious earlier, was rumored to be buried in the Weiyang Palace, her body still missing. In the end, only a handful of martial artists, a few loyal and courageous lower-ranking military officers, and thousands of hastily assembled soldiers remained. They stood before the ruins of the royal palace, gazing at the gigantic, silent “monster” in the sky.

“Alliance Leader Lin,” an official said nervously, “have they really stopped attacking? Can our Great Tang Dynasty continue to exist?”

Some martial arts heroes, their eyes red with rage, shouted, “Fight them! If it weren’t for their sorcery, I would have killed these demons long ago!”

Someone else looked coldly at Su Mi: “Alliance Leader, do you really believe this witch’s words?”

In the depressing atmosphere and chaotic emotions, Su Mi was too lazy to care about anything else. She looked up and suddenly saw with her naked eyes a Cheetah, which took off from the deck of the fortress and was flying straight towards the earth.

It was Meng Xicong’s messenger, carrying a mercenary contract. Once signed, the fate of this planet would change forever.

And Su Mi should follow the messenger and return to Meng Xicong obediently.

“■!” There was a loud noise; Su Mi opened his eyes wide and looked at the sky in disbelief.

Overhead, the majestic Cheetah, representing Meng Xicong and the mercenaries, was suddenly struck by a powerful line of fire from the side! With a fierce sound and flash of smoke, the fighter plane was instantly blown to pieces! Only a smoky void remained in the sky! Fragments of metal and flesh instantly fell to the ground like hail!

    Destroyed! Meng Xicong’s messenger!

Su Mi was stunned. Where did this powerful firepower come from?

That was definitely not the firepower that the Tang Dynasty, which was at the level of cold weapons, could possess! It was clearly a missile launched from the ground, instantly destroying a Cheetah!

Yue Mo and his companions on the ground also had drastic changes in their expressions. They all turned their heads and looked in the direction from which the shells had come—that was the ruins of the Weiyang Palace.

    Princess, where is she buried?

Meanwhile, in the space fortress high in the sky, technical officer Huo stood up and said in a deep voice, “Commander, our fighter jet has been shot down. There has been no response to calls to the pilot; preliminary assessment indicates he has perished. Requesting instructions.”

The officers in the entire combat center changed color instantly and all looked at Meng Xicong.

Meng Xicong stared coldly at the radar screen and said sternly, “Level 1 alert, prepare for battle.”
