Chapter 91. Prequel 1: The Advent of the Machines

In Su Mi’s 25 years of life, she was most proud of two things: becoming an Air Force lieutenant pilot and having Meng Xicong as her fiancé.

The day Meng Xicong proposed to her was also the day of the decisive battle in the offensive and defensive exercise between her 75th Division and Army B. Su Mi was in high spirits because of the happy occasion and “shot down” three enemy planes that were attacking the command post in one go. She turned the tide of the battle all by herself and once again made herself famous in the Northern Theater Command.

After the exercise ended, Su Mi and her comrades were drinking to celebrate when the division commander’s bodyguard invited them to the command room. Behind the desk, the usually stern division commander showed a rare smile: “Little Su, I’m here to find you a match today.”

Su Mi was refilling her second cup of her teacher’s treasured Mengding tea when she heard this and spat it all over the floor. Her teacher frowned in disgust but reluctantly beckoned to her and pushed the computer screen in front of her.

Wearing a pine-green military uniform with two bars and three stars, the young man had a resolute and handsome face and calm, refined eyes—clearly no ordinary man. But what was even more captivating was the division commander’s voice-over: “Commander Cui’s only son, thirty-five years old, commander of a heroic regiment, with the rank of colonel. A skilled and courageous soldier, steady and reliable. Little Su, although everyone says you’re my prized possession, he’s a perfect match for you!”

Looking at the man’s tall and handsome face, Su Mi sighed, “Those broad shoulders, narrow waist, and pert buttocks…”

The division commander shouted, “What nonsense are you spouting…”

“But, sir, I have a boyfriend.” Su Mi shrank back into her seat, continued drinking her tea, and remained unmoved.

The division commander, observing the situation, also took a sip of tea and slowly said, “I’ve heard of that junior engineer. Xiao Su, don’t refuse right away. You can try to get to know him first. Perhaps Commander Cui is more suitable for you. Commander Cui is my former superior; you can’t refuse him that favor.”

Su Mi immediately stood up, her face filled with unwavering resolve: “Of course! If the division commander says it’s given, then it must be given! But a few days ago, I could have backed out, but unfortunately, I just got engaged to my boyfriend this morning. As soldiers, we can’t break off an engagement and harm the people, can we?”

The division commander slammed his teacup down: “Bullshit! The exercise only ended at noon, and I haven’t lifted the communication ban yet! What kind of engagement are you talking about?”

Su Mi tried her best to maintain a calm expression, but a hint of smugness still crept in. Her superior, seeing her like this, scoffed, “Look at you, so smug! Don’t think you can just lie because I value you!”

Su Mi stood up abruptly, her words respectful but her expression proud: “Teacher, you often say that different professions are like different worlds. You cannot make hasty conclusions.”

She strode to the desk, scribbled a few lines of numbers on a sticky note, and handed it to her commander with both hands: “Enter these commands into the command bar of your defense system, and you’ll see I wasn’t lying.” She then snapped to attention, saluted, and said with a smile, “Commander, if there’s nothing else, I’ll take my leave. The brothers are waiting for me to celebrate our victory!”

Watching his trusted pilot leave with a sly smile, the division commander cursed and activated the defense system, inputting the numbers she had left behind.

    “19870526…19851105…looks like a birthday…BJK75076…isn’t that girl’s bugle number…?”

The division commander stared at the rapidly changing screen, remaining silent for a long time before finally asking incredulously, “This girl’s boyfriend… is a ‘hacker’?”

A moment later, he grabbed the phone and shouted, “Bring Su Mi here! That audacious little bastard!”

On the 17-inch LCD screen, all the programs and documents that had been running were gone. The once impregnable defense system, designed by experts hired by the military at great expense, seemed to have never existed.

On the screen, only a serene and beautiful blue sky and white clouds stretched out, and the grass was covered with a blanket of red roses, each one delicate and shimmering. Among the flowers, a man and a woman sat embracing. The man was dressed in a suit, and the woman in an Air Force flight uniform. A few seconds later, a line of clean and elegant regular script appeared above their heads.

    Sumi:

If you want the most romantic proposal, this is the only one I can think of. Marry me; you have no other choice.

    —Meng Xicong.

Despite being severely reprimanded by her teacher and promising not to let her boyfriend hack into the security system again, Su Mi still managed to plead with her teacher for three days off a few days later to go back to the city for Valentine’s Day.

Standing downstairs in her rented apartment building, Su Mi, in her dark blue military uniform, looked dashing, like a picture from an Air Force propaganda film, drawing sidelong glances and smiles from passing neighbors. But as Lieutenant Su Mi carried her luggage, her mind was filled with the various misdeeds of that ravenous wolf, Meng Xicong, during each of her family visits… So, her face flushed, she stepped into the elevator with impeccable military posture.

She opened the door. The curtains were drawn, and the room was dimly lit at midday. She walked into the guest room, which was used as a studio, and unsurprisingly saw Meng Xicong’s tall and upright figure, curled up on a single sofa, fast asleep.

    He worked all night again.

The faint light from the computer screens fell on his sharply defined, handsome face, highlighting his long, arched eyebrows and broad nose. Despite his strong features, there was a touch of delicate, unassuming beauty that tugged at the heartstrings. Even after seeing him countless times, Su Mi’s heart still fluttered.

Back in the day, Su Mi, who was practically the center of attention and almost above everyone else at the military academy, was in love with Meng Xicong, a cold and talented computer science student from the neighboring university of science and technology. Meng Xicong was the son of a certain commander and the nephew of a certain staff officer. In her anger, she almost destroyed the entire university of science and technology.

But she knew she had made the right choice. Six years had passed; he was now a top-tier, invisible hacker globally, while she remained just an ordinary pilot. Three years of military service had meant they were often apart, but she always stayed by his side, and he stayed by hers.

If there was one thing she miscalculated, it was this: beneath this man’s aloof and silent exterior lay a heart that yearned for a strong, assertive one…

Thinking about it, her hand couldn’t help but touch his face. Before she could even lower her head to place a warm kiss on his cheek, the world spun around them, and the roles of attack and defense were instantly reversed.

The person who was fast asleep just a moment ago now had a clear gaze as he pressed her heavily beneath him, easily restraining her hands. His handsome face was inches from hers, his deep eyes sparkling like stars: “It’s been half a year, and you still know how to come back?”

Hearing Meng Xicong’s slightly resentful words, Su Mi felt a pang of pain in her heart, but she remained unyielding: “You’ve been with me for six years, and you still don’t understand what it means to be a military wife?”

He kissed her slightly cold red lips and mumbled, “All I know is that if you don’t come back soon, I’ll go to your base and steal your wife.”

After a passionate kiss, his hand expertly slipped inside the military uniform skirt.

“No!” Su Mi panicked. “I need to wear this outfit when I get back.”

“…That’s even better.” He took his scent with him as he went back.

Ignoring her protests, he lowered his head and began to bite the buttons on her blouse one by one.

    The happiest thing in the world was to do it with Meng Xicong;

The most dangerous thing in the world was to do it with Meng Xicong after he had been starving for half a year.

As a top-tier technical expert, Meng Xicong took his work as seriously as he took his sex life.

Clothes, inside and out, were scattered all over the floor. He held Su Mi in his arms, hoisted her legs onto his shoulders, and pressed her back against the beige wallpaper wall. Perhaps half a year was too long, for when they became one, they both gasped for breath. He supported her waist and hips with one hand, while the other hand vigorously kneaded her full, snow-white breasts.

Su Mi knew that Meng Xicong liked this position. He liked to corner her like this, with her completely under his control in his arms.

After a chaotic seven or eight hours of tossing and turning, she finally fell asleep in his arms. His still erect and large member, however, stubbornly remained inside her, refusing to leave, leaving her both amused and exasperated.

He had probably worked all night and only slept a few hours, then rushed to greet his wife, so he was fast asleep. Su Mi pried his large hands off her waist, but as soon as she moved, he reflexively began thrusting into her again, arousing her once more. Looking up, she saw him with his eyes half-open, staring intently at her.

“Wife…” he whispered in her ear, “We must get married this October.”

“Fine, fine!” Her whole body tingled from his bite. “We’re engaged, and you still don’t trust me?”

He was finally satisfied and hugged her tightly again.

“Everyone says 2012 is the end of the world; are you really that desperate to get married?”

“Even if it’s the end of the universe, I will still marry you.” He closed his eyes, uttering rare sweet words.

Her heart softened, and she felt something slowly welling up. Yet, something else lingered, tickling her heart, never quite enough.

“Husband,” she said, looking at his handsome sleeping face, half-jokingly and triumphantly, “Don’t worry, if there really is an apocalypse, I’ll take you on a runaway journey in a fighter jet.”

After a while of playing around, Meng Xicong was listless, while Su Mi was still full of energy. Holding his hand, she asked as if talking to herself, “Honey, what will we do when I retire and you retire?”

“…What do you want to do?” Meng Xicong asked in a hoarse voice.

Su Mi’s eyes lit up: “I want to open a bakery. Sweet and fragrant, it would be so wonderful!”

Meng Xicong chuckled softly, then flipped over and pinned her down.

She struggled in his arms for a while before Meng Xicong, still half asleep, reluctantly released her. She drew back the curtains; the night was pitch black. She picked up her phone, which was off-silence, and discovered it was already past nine o’clock, with over a dozen missed calls! All from the division headquarters!

She panicked and, naked, grabbed her phone and rushed into the kitchen, the furthest room from the bedroom.

The chief of staff answered the phone, his tone unusually anxious: “Su Mi, why aren’t you answering the phone at a time like this?! Emergency mission! Report back as quickly as possible!”

She hung up the phone and ran away.

Suddenly, a flash of gray light appeared before her eyes!

She reacted quickly, dodging the fall. With a loud crash, she looked down to see the microwave had fallen to the floor. In her haste, she only glanced at the perfectly stable stovetop—how did this thing fall? And at such a steep angle, almost hitting her foot?

Time was of the essence, and without a second thought, she rushed into the bedroom. She hastily dressed in a corner. She patted Meng Xicong’s face, but he, usually a light sleeper, remained stubbornly asleep.

It’s better that he hasn’t woken up. She left a note, picked up her luggage, and ran. Along the way, she secretly cursed the division commander, chief of staff, and regimental commander—Meng Xicong had just announced that he was only “taking a short nap,” and if he woke up and found his wife had run away, wouldn’t he be furious? In his anger, he might actually hack the army’s defense system.

Thinking of this, her heart felt sweet—the man she loved cherished her as his one and only, and in this bustling yet tranquil city, they loved and cared for each other wholeheartedly. Who could be happier than her?

The early spring night was still bitterly cold. She stood at the entrance of her residential compound waiting for a taxi and inadvertently glanced at the dark night sky. The dim spring night was devoid of starlight, except for the full moon, which hung alone in the darkness, cold and translucent.

She squinted, then opened her eyes again, somewhat puzzled. She seemed to see a striking black dot on the moon, hovering silently.

An airplane? A helicopter? Who was hovering high in the sky on such a quiet and desolate Valentine’s Day night?

She looked up again, gazing at her window, which was as dark as the night; she inexplicably recalled the microwave oven that had inexplicably smashed against her legs and the anxious yet mysterious summons from the division headquarters.

The simultaneous occurrence of various unusual events, both large and small, suddenly made her feel inexplicably uneasy.

The feeling was as if some unknown changes were quietly unfolding in this ordinary night, subtly connected.

She seemed to have sensed something was amiss but had no idea what she was about to face.
