by MTL TranslationChapter 19. Love Me, Love My Dog
“Auntie, look who came to see you.” The middle-aged woman walked to the grandmother’s side and gently patted her shoulder.
“Grandma!” I broke free from Mu Xian’s hand and rushed over, stopping abruptly half a meter away from her. I did not know if I was just a real phantom in her eyes, and I did not know if I could feel her presence at all when I touched her hand.
Grandma slowly turned her gaze from the window. When she saw me, she was visibly startled, and an expression of immense joy appeared on her wrinkled, loving face. She reached out to me, her hands trembling, tears welling in her eyes: “Yaoyao! My Yaoyao!”
I stood there, trembling all over, and choked out, “Grandma, I am sorry; I’ve been too busy with work lately and have not had time to visit you. How are you?” I forced a smile, but my voice trailed off towards the end.
“Silly child, Grandma received your letter. Of course, work should come first.” She smiled through her tears. “You child, why did you spend money sending Grandma to this kind of nursing home and hiring a personal caregiver? What a waste of money!”
I was stunned for a moment and immediately realized that it was all arranged by Mu Xian. Although I had mentioned my grandmother to him, I never expected him to do such a thing, and I was momentarily speechless.
“What are you standing there for? Come here!” Grandma hurriedly wheeled herself forward a short distance towards me. I looked at her painfully, slowly took a step back, and whispered, “Grandma, I…”
“The past.” A clear, cold voice sounded behind me.
I stiffened and turned to look at him. He had already stood up at some point, his hands in his pockets, his face indistinct in the light and shadow.
“Do not be afraid; go on,” he repeated softly.

Hearing his encouragement, I did not know where the courage came from, but I slowly stepped forward. I had already reached my grandmother, and my heart suddenly started racing. I raised my hand and gently touched the back of her hand, which was resting on her knee.
The cool, soft, slightly rough texture ignited a surge of heat throughout my body—I could feel her; I could actually feel her! How could this be!
But I had no time to think about it anymore. I threw myself into her arms and hugged her tightly.
“Yaoyao…” Grandma’s helpless and heartbroken voice sounded above my head. “You’ve lost so much weight.” I leaned against her warm chest, tears still falling, and said with a smile, “I am on a diet.”
After a while, Grandma let go of me, and I stopped crying. We looked at each other, saying nothing, just smiling. Grandma asked about my work, and I quickly replied that I had been promoted again, that my boss was a bit annoying but still appreciated me. I made it up convincingly, and she nodded repeatedly. I asked her if she was doing well there, and she praised her highly, then scolded me for spending too much money, saying people thought she was a rich woman. I vaguely said that I had recently received a lot of bonuses and told her not to worry about money.
Just then, the middle-aged woman next to me brought my grandmother lunch, and I picked up a spoonful and fed her. She ate very happily, and the middle-aged woman said she ate half a bowl more than usual.
“But you are so busy with work; you do not need to come see me so often,” Grandma said. I did not know when I would see her again, so I could only nod.
At that moment, Grandma looked down at me with a smile and asked softly, “Yaoyao, do you have a boyfriend yet?”
I was taken aback by her question and whispered, “I am too busy with work.”
Grandma chuckled and looked behind me: “Who is that young man who came with you? I did not see him just now, and you did not even introduce him. How impolite.”
I froze, turning to look at Mu Xian. He was still the same, his face hidden in shadow.
“He is my friend,” I said.
“I am her fiancé.” A soft, gentle voice quietly sounded from behind.
I thought he would not talk to my grandmother at all, but who knew he would suddenly tell her such a shocking thing? Sure enough, my grandmother was very surprised: “Fiancé? You…you are engaged?”
I could only reply, “Yes.”
Grandma squinted at him and said, “Young man, come here and let Grandma take a look.”
I immediately sensed something was wrong and quickly stood up. Before I could even turn around, I heard his footsteps. My shoulder sank as he pulled me into his arms.
“Mu Xian, that is my name.” A clear, calm voice.
Grandma looked at us with a smile, paused for a moment, and then said repeatedly, “Good, good, good.” I did not know why she said “good,” but she suddenly burst into tears again.
“What is wrong?” I quickly knelt down and grabbed her hand. She smiled and wiped away her tears: “You have a fiancé, and Grandma is very happy. The boy you chose must be wonderful. Grandma is very relieved.”
I could not answer, but she took one of my hands and then reached out to Mu Xian, saying softly, “You two should love each other dearly. Xiao Mu, you must take good care of Yao Yao from now on.” I guessed she wanted to grab Mu Xian’s hand and put it together with mine, and I tried to stop her, but Mu Xian had already stepped aside and avoided her.
“I am sorry.” Mu Xian’s voice was calm and even, his brows slightly furrowed. “I am not used to being touched by other women, even if they are her elders.”
Grandma was taken aback, looking a little confused. I quickly changed the subject: “Grandma, he is just joking with you. He will take care of me.”
Before Grandma could speak, Mu Xian suddenly interjected, “I will take care of her as if she were my own life.”
My heart skipped a beat. I was about to tell my grandmother that he was joking, but then I saw her freeze again, staring at Mu Xian with a serious expression.
“Good, very good.” Grandma’s gaze softened and brightened. “Yaoyao has been without parents since she was little, and she is more stubborn than other girls. But she is a very gentle and considerate child. Young man, I will be at ease as long as you live a good life together.”
***
After a while, Grandma felt very tired and lay back down on the bed, falling asleep. I leaned against the headboard, watching her peaceful, smiling face slowly disappear, finally transforming into a hazy play of light and shadow before me. I reached out to touch it but touched nothing. Then all the light vanished abruptly, leaving only a dark and quiet room before me.
My nose stung, and the tears I had not been able to fully express in front of my grandmother surged forth like a silent tide bursting its banks. I knelt on the ground, cupping my face in my hands, the salty tears dripping through my fingers onto the floor.
My head was spinning, and I felt a mix of joy and sorrow. I could not care about anything else; all I wanted to do was cry. Suddenly, I felt a tightness around my waist, and someone lifted me up from the ground.
Falling into his arms again, I felt utterly exhausted and powerless, unwilling to resist or cope. He looked down at me, his dark eyes gleaming faintly in the shadows. That light suddenly drew closer, his breath brushing against my cheek.
He placed me on the bed, knelt between my legs, and held me tightly with both hands, rendering me immobile. Then he lowered his head, not to kiss my lips, but to lick away my tears with his warm, strong tongue. Soon, I could no longer feel the slight itch of the tears on my face, only the warm, wet saliva. Then he moved his tongue to my eyes and began to lick them.
My eyes were already a little swollen from crying, and his licking made them feel even stickier and hotter, making it hard to open them. The tears that were originally there were completely wiped away by his licking.
“Stop licking…” I said in a hoarse voice.
He hummed in agreement, looked away, but then forcefully sealed my lips with his. Our faces were pressed together, our breaths intertwined with our bodies. The feeling was so intense it was hard to breathe.
He sucked on my tongue forcefully. After crying so hard, being kissed like this by him left me in a complete mess, as if I were suffocating. I steeled myself, pressed my tongue against his, opened my mouth, and bit down hard, as if only in this way could I release the pent-up emotions in my heart.
But he was prepared; his tongue suddenly retracted, and I bit into empty air, my jaw even aching from the impact. He chuckled softly in the darkness and said, “If you attack me again, I have no obligation to keep my promise.”
Of course I understood what he meant, and I dared not bite again. He quickly kissed me again, his body still, his tongue entwining with mine hysterically. I was dizzy from his kisses, feeling my emotions growing increasingly suppressed, as if they were about to explode inside me. I heard myself groan, opened my mouth, and took his tongue in, sucking and licking it heavily, like a wild beast just like him.
It took a long time for us to end the kiss, both of us panting. He held me in his arms, his hand gently stroking my face. I stared at the dark, gloomy scene before me, my mind blank.
“When can I see Grandma again?” I asked him. I had just kissed him, and that was a thought I had been harboring as well.
His soft voice was right next to my ear: “That is your problem.”
I was completely stunned. This means…
“Anytime is fine?”
“The device is in the room,” he said casually. “Let Morin teach you how to use it. Remember to take the sensor chip you just received; that way, you and she can sense each other.”
A surge of overwhelming joy welled up inside me, and I said in a trembling voice, “Thank you.”
He did not answer, only gently licked my ear. My whole body went numb, but I endured it without moving. After a while, he seemed satisfied and whispered, “Our wedding is set for three months from now. Should we invite Grandma to the ceremony?”
My heart skipped a beat—three more months? I was no longer afraid of this news; it was even later than I had expected.
“No need. She is not in good health,” I said.
“I’ve been too busy this year,” he suddenly said. “Next year, after you have your first child, I will make time to go to Earth.”
I stared at him, dumbfounded. Although I knew I would definitely have his child, I never imagined it would be so soon. And what he meant was that once I had the child, he could come back to Earth with me?
“Okay,” I replied.
He was silent for a while but did not kiss me. I did not know what he was thinking, and I did not say anything either. After a while, he suddenly whispered in my ear, “Your pregnancy is 10 months along; we can start anytime.”
I was taken aback, and then I suddenly understood his intention.
He was undoubtedly a chauvinist at heart, an arrogant soldier. He once said he would not touch me before marriage, and he meant it. But that kiss just now probably made him feel uncomfortable, so he was subtly trying to persuade me by mentioning having a child.
Although my heart was still a little heavy, knowing that I could see my grandmother anytime made me feel much lighter. I found him a little funny, but not wanting him to notice, I simply replied, “I do not want to have children for now.”
