    ☆, Chapter 2. Pure White

Waking up in the morning, she would first practice for an hour or memorize vocabulary, then wash up, eat breakfast, and go to school. This was Fan Xiaoyuan’s daily routine, as it was for most of the sophomores in the International Department—even though, in the eyes of the senior students, their International Department lacked the pressure of entrance exams and was just sitting around waiting for death.

Today, Fan Xiaoyuan was working on an English listening test. Her listening scores were remarkably consistent—almost as stable as on the IELTS, where she could pass the first two sections well but barely catch a single blank in the last section.

It was just 7:10 a.m. when she arrived at school, 20 minutes before morning self-study. The classroom was still empty. After handing her homework to her group leader’s desk, Fan Xiaoyuan lay there in a daze, unable to stop thinking about her dream from last night.

That dream was truly bizarre. First, it felt so real, and second, she had actually dreamt of Yuwen Ke?!

Yuwen Ke was the class monitor. It was said that his name came from his father’s surname, Yuwen, and his mother’s Chinese language teacher.

He wasn’t just good at Chinese; he excelled in all subjects. Add to that his tall stature, good looks, and quiet personality, and he pretty much fit the mold of a “cool, aloof male god” among middle and high school students. He had plenty of admirers in the International Department and even in the neighboring high and middle schools.

However, Fan Xiaoyuan disliked him because, aside from eating and sleeping, his daily schedule consisted of a routine of reading, doing exercises, and playing basketball for forty minutes in the evening.

Fan Xiaoyuan wondered, how could he be called a “cool, aloof male god”? He was just a nerd with a barely-there sports hobby!

In her opinion, Fang Jin, the lead singer of the rock band from the next class, was more handsome.

    “Knock, knock.”

Fan Xiaoyuan was awakened from her dream by a knock on the corner coming from someone standing in front of her desk. When she turned to look, it was Ning Ning sitting at the table in front of her.

    “What’s wrong?” she asked.

Ning Ning said mysteriously, “Someone asked me to ask you for a favor.”

    “What is it?”

Ning Ning leaned closer. “There’s a game next week between our department and the High School department. Could you cheerleaders please help out?”

    “?”

Fan Xiaoyuan frowned in confusion. “Of course we’re going. I’ll wait for the teacher to tell us.”

Ning Ning added, “It’s a basketball game.”

    Fan Xiaoyuan: “…”

She didn’t respond. Ning Ning nudged her desk, acting like a spoiled child.

The conflict between the International Department cheerleading squad and the basketball club was a historical issue. At the time of the incident, Fan Xiaoyuan was a newly enrolled third-year student.

The incident began when the then-president of the basketball club made vulgar jokes about the cheerleaders in the club’s WeChat group, and someone had taken screenshots and posted them on the forum. At the time, the issue of women’s rights was also generating widespread attention on Weibo, and the incident quickly escalated, ultimately forcing the student union to intervene and replace the basketball club president.

The core cheerleaders at the time were dissatisfied, as the basketball club hadn’t even offered an apology, and they valued that statement the most.

So the cheerleaders continued to post on the forum, demanding a public apology from the basketball club.

The basketball club, perhaps because they were truly lacking in emotional intelligence, or perhaps because boys their age were prone to being pompous and reckless, slammed the table in a fit of anger and replied, “Apology? No way! If you’re capable, don’t come cheer for us. We don’t want you!”

The cheerleaders looked at them and thought, “Great! If you don’t apologize, we’ll never come to cheer you on again! Not this term, not the next, not every term after, until you apologize!”

With that, the friendship between the two sides was completely severed. In addition, the school had always maintained the attitude of “letting students make their own decisions” on similar issues, so this argument was really “passed on” until Fan Xiaoyuan took over the cheerleading team.

Fan Xiaoyuan knew who had sent Ning Ning, even without asking. She said expressionlessly, “Ningzi, you can’t throw my integrity away just for their vice president!”

“This is a war with outsiders!!!” Ning Ning slammed her desk. “Think about it. If we lose, it’ll be our International Department members who will be embarrassed!”

Fan Xiaoyuan: “Then why don’t you ask their basketball club to publicly apologize?”

“We’re all from the same department; why are you being so rigid?” Ning Ning said.

Fan Xiaoyuan: “Not rigid, not rigid. Ask them to apologize, and I’ll lead the whole squad in cheering them on!”

Ning Ning pleaded earnestly: “Just because the current president is our class monitor, Yuwen Ke…”

    “Don’t even mention Yuwen Ke!”

Fan Xiaoyuan suddenly slammed the table and shouted, startling Ning Ning so much that she choked.

    “?”

Yuwen Ke, who had just entered the classroom, paused, then his gaze fixed on Fan Xiaoyuan.

    Fan Xiaoyuan: “…”

Her eyes blanked in embarrassment. “Chinese class… we have to do dictation again, and I haven’t… finished memorizing yet…”

    “…”

Yuwen Ke quickly snapped out of his trance and continued walking towards his seat. He was tall and sat in the last row, but the International Department only had 25 students per class, and the distance between the last and first rows was only a few meters.

So, his sneeze sounded particularly loud while he was sitting.

The boy at the next table casually asked, “Hey, Class Monitor, are you catching a cold?”

“Yeah, I caught a cold last night,” Yuwen Ke replied indifferently, then lowered his head to flip through his homework.

Fan Xiaoyuan’s ears twitched. She was about to say, “Ah, this dream seems to have come true… Sorry, class monitor! I really didn’t dream about you diving because I hate you!”

Ning Ning patted her arm, bringing her back to her senses. Ning Ning lowered her voice when she spoke again. “We haven’t played basketball against the High School team in two years. If the cheerleaders don’t go this time and we lose, won’t you be scolded by the whole department?”

“Oh, so if they don’t apologize and I bring my team, then won’t I be scolded by the seniors and juniors?” Fan Xiaoyuan glared. “Those people in our school’s current affairs forum are so venomous. I can’t afford to offend them!”

    “But you…”

“I swear I really want to make peace, okay?” Fan Xiaoyuan sighed, pulling the vocabulary book from the desk drawer and slamming it on the table. “But they won’t apologize, so there’s nothing I can do. Rather than bowing down, I’d rather maintain the status quo.”

After all, they were in the wrong in the first place on that historical issue.

The bell for morning self-study soon rang, and Fan Xiaoyuan and Ning Ning stopped arguing about it, both figuring they still had a week to go.

However, after school that afternoon, they opened the campus forum and discovered that a fight had already broken out over the cheerleading squad!

The one fighting them wasn’t the International Department basketball club, but the High School cheerleading squad. The captain had posted a provocative challenge, saying, “Our team has twelve new cheerleaders this year. What’s wrong with the International Department? Let’s compete next Monday!”

The relationship between the High School Department and the International Department had always been delicate. One department was targeting Tsinghua University and Peking University, while the other was targeting prestigious international universities. The former thought the latter are all dandies, while the latter despised the former for having high scores but low intelligence.

So, any trivial matter could become a heated argument between the two departments. By the time Fan Xiaoyuan saw this post, the thread had already reached over 200 replies.

—Also, almost no one mentioned the old grudges between the International Department’s basketball club and cheerleading squad. The entire thread was full of challenges.

[3L] WCNMB1! The first to provoke is the cheapest! Next week, just wait and see how your cheerleading squad will fare!

【4L】233332, 666666663, did you just get a new freshman as your captain? Too little homework?

【231L】Fuck, you think the only thing you’re worse than the International Department at is English? Next week we’ll show you who’s the boss!

【232L】Besides studying hard, what else can the High School Department show off? Hahahaha, our senior Xiaoyuan may have average grades, but her specialties are way better than yours! See you on the court next week, muah!

    Fan Xiaoyuan: “…”

Shit, if she wouldn’t go, it’d be a disgrace to the International Department.

However, it was better for the basketball club to make a public apology first. What should she do?

They couldn’t let her seduce Yuwen Ke, could they?

That nerd Yuwen Ke wouldn’t fall for it!
